School of Football
At Vale of Leven Academy we are very proud to be associated with our partners in delivering the School of Football programme to our selected youngsters.
The School of Football is first and foremost a project aimed at developing the social and academic skills of young people during their first and second year of high school. We work on the basis that many skills developed whilst working in a football environment are transferable to school work and social situations.
Linked with Curriculum for Excellence’s key priorities, the programme aims to:
As part of this programme our pupils will receive the equivalent of five periods per week of focused football education.
Vision and Aims
Vale of Leven Academy is home to the SFA School of Football programme - part of the Scottish FA's mission to encourage more young people to play the game, more often.
The Scottish FA, in partnership with Vale of Leven Academy and West Dunbartonshire Leisure provide a programme that is about more than just playing ability; we aim to mould better citizens and develop social and academic abilities through the vehicle of football.
As part of the programme, pupils follow an enhanced timetable which includes the equivalent of a period of football activity every day.
Football is used as a tool to motivate the pupils, enhance their social skills such as communication, listening and behaviour with the programme’s success being evaluated through factors such as school attendance and academic improvement.
Due to the fact that the players are involved in daily sessions for the first two years of their school life, they must possess a reasonable playing ability to cope with these demands, however their selection is based on much more.
Their social circumstances, academic performance and attendance are all important indicators in deciding whether or not they are appropriate for the programme.
Scottish FA coaches, along with P.E. teachers from the school, lead selection and football aspects, but the programme is very much a partnership with local authority education departments, school teachers and football development officers.
The Scottish FA Schools of Football are supported by the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities initiative which puts criminals’ ill-gotten gains to a good use with the Scottish FA being one of four national CashBack sports partners.
Catch Up Sessions
In order to participate effectively in the School of Football programme, pupils will be required to miss some of their classes throughout the week. It is a fundamental requirement of the programme that any work missed is caught up in a prompt manner so your child’s progress is not hindered.
At Vale of Leven Academy we strive to provide as much support as possible to our young people in achieving this goal. Every person involved in the programme and your child’s education has a responsibility to ensure that the programme enhances their education and that attainment is not affected.

Pupils
Pupils should ask their teacher for the work that has been missed and should use catch up sessions along with independent study to ensure work is completed. If additional support is required then your child should speak, in the first instance, with their class teacher.
